Fundraising Talks
For Badgers & Birds of Prey
Owl & Bird of Prey Rescue Essex & Suffolk
Stephanie’s talk was sold out so we had a morning and afternoon session. She told us all about the Owls before we had a break for tea and Owl cakes and then finished by telling us about the Kestrels and Buzzards with plenty of amusing anecdotes thrown in.
Should you find an injured or young owlet or bird of prey call Stephanie on 01787 460593 and this is her website: Owls and Birds of Prey Rescue At the bottom of this page I have also copied out her advice on what to do.
North East Essex Badger Group
North East Essex Badger Group’s talk was presented by Paul. The badger group rescue and monitor sets and record the many road traffic accidents that kill our stripy friends. We were also lucky enough to have the Wildlife Officer present who also gave a presentation regarding the law and wildlife. Tea and cake including home made custard creams, the badgers favourite biscuit don’t you know completed the talk!
Both talks raised money for these small hard working charities and raised awareness about the animals they are so passionate about, so a big thank you to everyone who came. The talks also, perhaps more importantly, taught us all so much about these birds and badgers, their habits, how they live and are an integral part of our ecosystem and dispelled many myths which turn people against them.
Should you find an injured badger in the North East Essex area call the hotline on 07751 572175. This is the website: North East Essex Badger Group – home
If you find an injured or sick bird of prey:
Contact Owls and Birds of Prey Rescue on 01787 460593 or 07831 339 455 for advice.
Remember, minimum stress is the first requirement as many birds are killed by stress rather than their injuries.
If you can approach the bird and pick it up, then it is in need of assistance.
• Approach very slowly and calmly, put a towel over it, covering the eyes to calm it down, and lift the bird carefully and place in a well ventilated box with a towel or jumper at the bottom.
• Place the box in a quiet, warm, dark place to avoid stress
• DO NOT give food or water
• Record precise details of where you found the bird as we need this information when releasing the bird back into its territory.
• Contact us at Owls and Birds of Prey Rescue if the bird is in Suffolk or Essex
If you find an injured or sick badger:
Any live badger casualty should be covered with a blanket or coat (this reduces the stress to the animal and has the effect of calming it thereby reducing the likelihood of escape and/or further injury.)
If you are in the North East Essex area the hotline should be contacted immediately 07751 572175 (day or night) and careful note made of the EXACT location of the casualty. (It is also VERY IMPORTANT that someone stays with the animal until help arrives.)
In the event the animal can be returned to the wild, it would need to be returned as close as possible to the original location, in order that it can find it’s way ‘home’. Experienced members of the group are equipped with cages and graspers and can transport the casualty to a vet for treatment.
Please do not attempt to transport an uncaged badger in your car – even one that appears to be unconscious. They can recover sufficiently to cause immense problems to the driver and any occupants of the vehicle. The group has a rehabilitation pen where rest and recuperation can take place if necessary, prior to release back into the wild.
